The Pine Tree Of Liberty
The Crown favored the eastern white pine; its straightness, strength (for a softwood), and rapid growth rate made it a favorite for certain shipbuilding applications, such as masts. White pines over 12 inches in diameter were reserved for the British Royal Navy. When a New Hampshire sawmill owner refused to pay a fine for possession and milling of the marked logs, the 1772 Pine Tree Riot ensued, and the pine entered the lexicon of resistance. Three years later, George Washington commissioned six frigates, ironically flying a pine tree flag on the very masts the British sought to protect for their own use. With the tree: "An appeal to heaven."
"And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment."
~ John Locke, Two Treatise on Civil Government
